The 27th Annual Pan African Film & Arts Festival is proud to announce that one of the short films in this year’s festival, SKIN, directed by Guy Nativ, won the Oscar for Live Action Short on Sunday evening. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences designated PAFF as an official qualifying film festival for live action and animation short films.

The 2019 festival opened with an exclusive screening of Aretha Franklin's legendary Amazing Grace concert film on February 7 at the Director's Guild of America, wrapped up on February 18 by showcasing film and music from the next generation of filmmakers. The winners of the 2019 Pan African Filmmakers Awards were announced on the final day at the annual Filmmaker Brunch, followed by screenings with stars such as Common, Sherri Shepherd, Dante Brown and Xzibit.

America's largest international black film festival screened over 190 films, exhibited over 100 fine artists and unique crafts, and hosted a robust offering of panels and community events during African American Heritage Month at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. The Oscar-qualifying festival's 2019 Filmmaker Awards winners included Sprinter (Jamaica), directed by Storm Saulter (Best Narrative Feature,) Mr Soul! (US), directed by Melissa Haizlip (Best Feature Documentary,) Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes (UK) directed by Sophie Huber (Programmer's Documentary Feature) and Ali's Comeback: The Untold Story (US) Directed by Art L. Jones (Audience Award, Documentary Feature.)
